Montgomery Parks announces that the design submission “Rooted and Radiant” has been selected as the winning mural to adorn the park activity building at Glenmont Local Park. Four artists were shortlisted to develop site-specific designs, with the final selection made by the community through an open voting process. The contest generated over 2,500 votes. The artist will begin work on the mural in mid-October, and it will be unveiled in early November.

“Public art can reimagine how people experience our parks,” said Samantha Shron, architectural supervisor for Montgomery Parks. "This mural will serve as both a welcoming landmark and a celebration of the creativity and diversity that bring the Glenmont community together.”

Red Swan, a Baltimore-based mural studio run by artists Hanna Moran and Lindy Swan, created the mural to celebrate Glenmont’s diversity by bringing together plants and animals from Maryland and the Latin American countries most represented in the community—El Salvador, Guatemala, and Mexico.

The new public art mural will transform the south facade of the Glenmont Local Park Activity Building—located in the 3200 block of Randolph Road. Built in 1954 and renovated in 2018, the mid-century modern structure is one of 19 park activity buildings in the Montgomery Parks system serving as a popular hub for community events.

“The vibrant, uplifting design embodies both energy and warmth and will be a beautiful addition to the park activity building and the community,” said Katie Rictor, executive director of the Montgomery Parks Foundation.

The mural initiative is made possible by a generous grant from the Montgomery Parks Foundation and is part of Montgomery Parks’ ongoing efforts to incorporate public art into park spaces across the county.
