Stoneybrook Local Park Renovation

Let us know what improvements you would like to see at Stoneybrook Local Park.

Montgomery Parks is planning a renovation that will upgrade current amenities and introduce new ones, such as a skate park. Please take the survey and share your thoughts and ideas about the park to help us enhance it for the community. The comment period is open until November 28, 2025.

We also invite the public to join Parks staff in a virtual community meeting on Tuesday, October 28, 2025. During the meeting, attendees are encouraged to submit comments and questions about the project.

For more information about the project, visit the Stoneybrook Local Park Renovation project page.

Stoneybrook Local Park, encompassing approximately 11 acres, was acquired by M-NCPPC in 1971 and is surrounded by residential neighborhoods. The park currently features a playground, park activity building, soccer field, softball field overlay, basketball courts, and lighted tennis courts. In spring 2025, the soccer field was renovated and relocated to make space for upcoming park improvements.

Report summary:

Montgomery Parks is planning to renovate Stoneybrook Local Park, including adding a skate park, relocating and renovating the playground, updating the courts in the park, and potentially adding fitness equipment. A community meeting was held on October 28, 2025, to discuss the future renovation and solicit public feedback. This report summarizes the survey results and community feedback received for this project.

Parks’ Response to Survey

Parks recommends the following amenities based on the survey results: a new relocated playground, renovated sports courts, a walking path, a shaded picnic area, and a skate park. Parks is also considering refinements to the parking lot, the incorporation of fitness equipment, and support for dog owners and their pets. The Park Activity Building will be removed and replaced with a picnic shelter that may include grills. A porta potty will continue to be available for visitors following the park renovation. The final layout and list of site amenities will be determined through the design process, which will begin in 2026.  Please check back for periodic updates on the park renovation as we move through the design and construction process.

Summary of "Other" responses:

Most respondents requested new playground equipment and improved picnic areas, making these top priorities for the renovation. Requests for loop trails/walking paths and shade were also common, while a few respondents expressed interest in pickleball courts and dog-friendly features.

Other suggestions included a pump track for bikes, management of invasive plants, improved trash can placement, historical plaques, a community board, and changes to parking and safer access for children. There was also support for maintaining and updating existing sports courts and fields.

Please share your thoughts on a new skate park being introduced at the park.

Summary:

Many respondents expressed support for a new skate park, citing benefits such as inclusivity, physical and mental health, and community-building. Several highlighted the lack of nearby skate parks and the growing popularity of skateboarding and related activities. There was a recurring suggestion to design the skate park for beginners and younger users, with smaller, mellower features and transition elements, rather than large, advanced obstacles.

However, a significant number of respondents were skeptical or opposed, questioning the demand for a skate park in the neighborhood and expressing concerns about safety, noise, and potential for loitering or undesirable behavior. Some noted they rarely see skateboarders in the area and suggested focusing on other amenities, especially playground improvements for younger children, walking trails, and general park upgrades.

A few respondents raised environmental concerns, urging that any new construction should not increase impervious surfaces or harm mature trees.

What would you like Montgomery Parks staff to know about Stoneybrook Local Park?

A number of responses highlighted the desire for more shaded seating and picnic areas, as well as additional restrooms. Several respondents asked for more sports facilities, such as basketball courts and soccer fields, while others suggested adding a dog park. Environmental improvements, including more native plantings and better trash management, were also noted.

Some comments expressed appreciation for the park’s natural areas and requested that renovations preserve green space and mature trees. A few respondents mentioned the need for community event spaces and programming. There were also suggestions for improved signage and wayfinding, as well as requests for water fountains and bike racks.

Overall, the most common themes were accessibility, safety, upgraded play and sports facilities, and preservation of natural features.
